Wilma Boucher

March 11, 1935 — July 9, 2025

Lowell

Lowell - Wilma Boucher, 90, a longtime Lowell resident, died peacefully at home surrounded by family on July 9, 2025. She was the beloved wife of Joseph Boucher, with whom she enjoyed 55 years of marriage.

Born on March 11, 1935, in Monifieth, Scotland, she was the son of Thomas and Mary (Dunn) Hunter. She attended grade school in Scotland and later earned a certificate in nursing there.

As a registered nurse, she worked in a number of high-risk roles in Scotland, including a tuberculosis ward, the poverty-stricken Gorbals ghetto in Glasgow, and on an “air ambulance” serving remote islands, where she did everything from providing care to delivering babies. She was also a member of Saint Rule’s church.

Wilma emigrated to the US in 1967. She continued her nursing career at several area hospitals and nursing homes, including an extended period at the former Heritage Nursing Care Center on Merrimack Street in Lowell. In the US, she joined the Eliot Church and, when her other responsibilities allowed it, was active in the church’s good works.

A voracious reader since childhood, her other interests included the seaside, Scottish history, bagpipe music, and maintaining connections with friends and relatives in her native country. Most of all she enjoyed spending time with her family, which grew to include three children, five grandsons, and one great-grandson.

Wilma is predeceased by her husband Joseph and sister Mary. She is survived by her brother, Thomas Hunter; sons, Tom and his wife Cristy, Chris and his wife Erica; daughter, Elaine and her husband Sandi Marte; grandsons, Colton, Braden, Hunter, Jaden and Kaleb; and great-grandson, Ethan.

Wilma’s loved ones would like to express special thanks to the staff at Lowell General Hospital and Tufts Hospice for their gentle care as well as facilitating her final days at home as was her wish.

All services were held privately with burial in Lowell Cemetery.
