Dracut - William J. Doherty, 77, husband of Athene M. (Gray) Doherty, died unexpectedly Friday August 19, at his Dracut residence.
He was born in Everett on July 15, 1928, a son of the late Patrick and Mary (Farren) Doherty, and had been an Everett resident until moving to Dracut 11 years ago.
Mr. Doherty was a Veteran of WWII and the Korean Conflict having served in the Merchant Marines and the US Navy.
He was a Police Sergeant, for the Everett Police Department, retiring in 1982.
Mr. Doherty was a communicant of Ste. Therese Church, a member of the Massachusetts Police Association, the Everett Police Mutual Aid, and a friend of Bill W.
Surviving him besides his wife are four sons and daughters in law, Patrick and Claire Doherty, Thomas and Kathleen Ford Doherty all of Winthrop, Michael and Judy Doherty of Boca Raton, FL, Timothy and Anne-Marie Doherty of Lawrence; three daughters and two sons in law, Mary and Andrew Hickey of Dracut, Janice and Mario Mancini of Melrose, Kathleen Doherty of Dracut; a sister and brother in law, Mary and Robert Cadogan of Harwich; a brother in law, Jim Dyer of Newburyport; nineteen grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was also the brother of the late Roseann Dyer.
