Andover - William C. Collins, 84, of Andover, MA, widower of Arlene F. (Provencher) Collins, died Wednesday, November 16, 2011 after a period of declining health.
Born in Andover, he was a son of the late Annie (Sweeney) and William B. Collins. Mr. Collins was a graduate of Punchard High School in Andover as well as the New England School of Art, Boston University and Northeastern University's Insurance Institute. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II during which time he received several commendations.
Bill served on the Lowell School Committee from 1968-1974 during which time he was an advocate of school bus safety, curriculum innovation and a strong backer of community participation in the educational affairs of the city. He also served as the School Department's Business Manager. For many years, Bill was the President of the Merrimack Valley Chapter of the March of Dimes.
Bill started his insurance career in 1954 working for Prudential, Kincaid, Hartford Mutual and Sentry Insurance before opening his own business, William C. Collins Insurance Agency, in 1982 on Market Street in Lowell. In 2006, at the age of 79, Mr. Collins sold his business to James L. Cooney.
Mr. Collins is survived by his daughters, Susan M. Olsen and her husband Everett V. Olsen, Jr., of North Chelmsford, Kathleen McDonald and her husband Joseph of Lowell, Christine Lagasse of Dracut, his sons Stephen A. Collins and his wife Cheryl L. of Lowell, John T. Collins of Dracut, and Daniel F. Collins and his wife Susan A. T. of Haverhill, 17 grandchildren; Kara Collins Silva, Bill Olsen, Timothy Collins, Kristin Olsen Kinglocke, Erin Collins, Matthew Collins, Kirby Olsen Gardner, Kate Olsen Brandes, Danielle, Stephen, Christopher, Christian, Remy, Logan, Stephanie and Samantha Collins, Nicholas MacDonald, and 17 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his dear cousin Eleanor Sheehan of Salem, New Hampshire. Mr. Collins is predeceased by his daughter Maureen E. Collins, son W. Neil Collins who died in June and his brother Paul S. Collins
