William S. Bray

June 29, 1935 — March 1, 2016

LOWELL – William S. Bray, 80, of Lowell, passed away peacefully at his home on March 1, 2016. He was born in Lowell on June 29, 1935, and was the son of the late Mary (Dunlavey) Bray and George R. Bray. He was educated in the Lowell school system, having graduated from Keith Academy with the class of 1953. He then went on to study X-ray technology.

Bill proudly served his country in the United States Army and was honorably discharged. Upon his discharge, he started his career as an X-ray technician at Fitchburg Hospital. He later went on to Winchester Hospital where he worked for 35 years before retiring in 1993 as the Administrative Director of Radiology.

He was certified and registered with The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists. As the Director his was instrumental in enhancing the technical capabilities of both the Radiology and EKG Departments with the procurement of the newest state of the art equipment and with the increased staffing in the clinical and technical areas. His department was recognized as one of the top at the hospital. Upon his retirement, the hospital honored him by creating a scholarship in his name. The scholarship is available to employees in radiology, nuclear medicine, mammography, CT scan, and ultrasound. Over the past 23 years, Bill has reviewed the applications and along with a board made the decision on the most deserving recipients.

Bill was a devout Catholic with a strong faith. He was proud of his Irish heritage and made a hobby of researching his family roots on both the Dunlavey and Bray sides. He loved his family dearly, having cared for both of his parents until their deaths.

In his younger years Bill traveled extensively to countries like Greece, Italy, Spain, China, France, and Ireland, as well as most of the Caribbean Islands.

Bill was a kind, gentle and dignified man who led a full and happy life. He will be deeply missed.

He is survived by his cousin and her family, Noreen (Dunlavey) MacDonald and her husband Bruce of Westford; Kevin and Stacy MacDonald of Hudson, NH; his godson, William and his wife Allicia and their son, Zachary MacDonald, all of San Francisco, CA.

He was predeceased by his brother George Bray, as well as several aunts, uncles, and cousins.
