Walter J. Roper, Jr., husband of Janet A. (Brodeur) Roper, passed away peacefully on Sunday December 11, 2011, at his Lowell residence following an extended illness with his loving family by his side. He was 71.
Walter was born in Lowell on April 11, 1940, a son of the late Walter J. and Kathleen (Sarmento) Roper, Sr.
He attended Lowell Schools and was a graduate of Lowell High School.
Prior to his retirement Walter was employed as a newspaper distributor, working at the Lowell Sun. He had also worked for New Balance Shoes in Lawrence for 8 years.
Walter was a communicant of St. Michael Church.
Surviving him besides his wife are two sons and a daughter in law, Kevin and Debra Roper and Michael Roper all of Lowell; two daughters and sons in law, Kathleen and John Reynolds of Nashua, NH, and Julie and Richard Baldwin of Lowell; nine grandchildren, Ashley, Cam, and Shayna Roper of Lowell, Michael Roper and Hayley Strykowski both of Lowell, John Reynolds and his wife Leah of Milford, NH, Corey and Derek Reynolds of Nashua, NH, Alyssa Donnelly, of Lowell; two great grandchildren, Alianna Truax and Tristan Reynolds; brother in law of Normand and Deborah Brodeur of Ayer, Roland Brodeur of Pelham, NH, Roger Brodeur of Manchester, NH, Nancy Searles of Concord, NH, Robert MacDonald of Lowell. Also survived by several nieces, nephews, and close friends. He was also the brother in law of the late Paulette MacDonald of Lowell.
Walter's family would like to thank members of Merrimack Valley Hospice, Shannon O'Hearn, Sister Pat, Sandi and Marie, for the kind and compassionate care given to him during his illness.
