Walter P. Greene, a resident of the Centralville section of Lowell and the beloved husband of Maureen C. (Cahill) Greene, died on Thursday October 30, 2014 at the Lowell General Hospital – Saints Campus, with his family by his side. He was 82.
Born in Lowell on June 11, 1932, Walter was a son of the late John and Catherine (Gillogley) Greene who both immigrated from Ireland.
Walter was educated in the Lowell schools. When he was a young, he was very successful selling the newspaper, The Boston Record, throughout Lowell.
He entered the Army and served during the Korean War. Following Walter's service to our country, he began a career as a machinist. He worked for the former RCA Company which merged with General Electric and then retired from General Electric in Burlington. Upon retirement, as a part time job, he could be seen in supermarkets throughout the area passing out samples with a smile. He had a special way of brightening up the day of everyone he met.
Family members describe Walter as an intelligent person that was independent and funny, always caring, but had a stubborn streak. He always stuck to his daily routine.
Walter would read the Lowell Sun and Boston Globe from cover to cover every day. He also liked to read various scientific magazines. He enjoyed visiting the library and following politics. Walter looked forward to Saturday and Sunday lunch with Maureen and his many friends at the Lowell Senior Center. He was an avid Red Sox and Patriots fan. Walter cherished his quiet time of just sitting on his back porch listening to Big Band music or going for coffee with Maureen. Family was paramount to Walter. He loved Sunday afternoons when everyone would drop by the house. He especially looked forward to special events with his grandchildren.
Surviving him besides his wife Maureen are his five children, Robert Greene and his wife Gloria of Dracut, Daniel P. Greene and his wife Lori of Lowell, Jennifer Greene, Christine Greene both of Lowell, Michael Young and his wife Cindy of Bellingham; nine grandchildren, Matthew Pholy, Jonathan Greene, Marissa Greene, Shyanne Greene, Cameron Greene, Daniel J. Greene, Leah Silva, Elizabeth Bochan, Morgan Bochan; and many nieces and nephews. He was also the brother of the late William Greene, Anna (Greene) Hire, John Greene, Helen Greene, and Mary Greene and the godfather of his niece, Helen McGovern of Tyngsborough.
