Walter D. Gilman

Feb 18, 1946 — Oct 10, 2026

Lowell

Walter D. Gilman, a lifelong resident of Lowell, passed away at the age of 80, leaving behind a family who loved him dearly.

Born on February 18, 1946, Walter was the son of the late Walter E. Gilman and Mildred (Mullen) Gilman. He grew up on Christian Hill in Lowell, where he spent most of his life and developed a deep connection to the neighborhood and the people who called it home. He attended Lowell schools and formed many lasting friendships throughout the years. Fifty-three years ago, Walter purchased a home on the very same street where he had grown up, a testament to his lifelong roots in the community he loved.

Walter proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War era. He served as a medic, stationed in Boston and at Fort Devens, and took pride in having served his country.

Walter shared his life with his wife, Brenda L. (Howard) Gilman, and together they built a family. He valued the relationships he formed throughout his life, from his family to the many longtime friends who remained an important part of his world.

Walter retired from the Chelmsford Water Department, but his true passion was always working on cars. A mechanic at heart, he loved automobiles and enjoyed working with his hands. He was a true jack of all trades. Outside of work, Walter could often be found cheering on his Boston sports teams, camping, spending time at the beach, or playing Keno at a few of his favorite local watering holes. He appreciated the simple pleasures of life: good company, familiar faces, and friendships that stood the test of time.

Walter is survived by his wife, Brenda; his sons, Keith Gilman and Scott Gilman and his wife, Alyssa; his grandchildren, Sean and Nicholas Johnson, Amanda Malomo, Steven and Brian Gilman, Brandon Gilman, Max, Sam, and Annie Gilman; his great-grandchildren; his sister, Mary Paletta and her husband, Barry; as well as cousins and many other family members who will miss him dearly.

He was predeceased by his children, Robbin Malomo and David Gilman, whose memories remain forever woven into the fabric of the family and his granddaughter, Shala Johnson.

He will be forever loved and never forgotten.

Relatives and friends are invited to Walter’s graveside service on Thursday, October 22, 2026 at 10 AM at ST. PATRICK CEMETERY, 1251 Gotham Street, Lowell.
