Vincent Valvo

August 20, 1925 — June 24, 2006

Dracut - Vincent Valvo, 80, husband of Mildred H. (Harnois) Valvo, with whom he would have celebrated 43 years of marriage on July 27th of this year, a Dracut resident for the past 41 years, died Saturday June 24, at the Lowell General Hospital.
He was born in Wakefield on August 20, 1925, a son of the late Paul and Gladys (Powers) Valvo.
He graduated from the Fox Grammar School in Haverhill and then attended Haverhill Trade School.
Mr. Valvo a member of "the Greatest Generation," was a WWII veteran having enlisted in the Navy at age 17 and served aboard the USS WASP from 1943 to 1946 as a carpenters mate and a seaman second class.
He was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Medal for Bravery for rescuing injured sailors when a bomb was dropped by a Japanese kamikaze plane on March 19, 1945.
Mr. Valvo was featured in a Lowell Sun article on March 20, 1995, recalling this attack.
He also received a World War II Victory Medal, American Theatre Medal, European African Theatre Medal, Asiatic Pacific Theatre Medal - 8 Stars, Philippine Liberation Medal - 2 Stars.
He retired in 1985 after 40 years of service in the International Brotherhood of Sheet Metal Workers, Local 17 in Boston. Mr. Valvo was also a Life member of the VFW, Post 29, in Haverhill, and a member of the WASP Spirit.
On trips to Las Vegas he enjoyed playing golf. One of his trips he recalled proudly playing a round of golf with the late singer/comedian Sammy Davis, Jr.
Survivng him besides his wife are two sons and a daughter in law, Vance P. and Pamela Valvo of Edmond, OK, Vincent Scott Valvo of Ocala, FL, two daughters and a son in law, Virginia Colby of Harrison, ME., Carol Ann and George Martin of Pelham, NH; six grandchildren, Stefanie Colby, of Harrison, ME, Carina Valvo, of Edmond, OK, Vanessa Valvo, Victoria Valvo, both of Ocala, FL, Robert Martin, of Pelham, NH, Donna Podd and her husband Timothy of Milford, NH; two great grandchildren, Hazel Berry, and Stephen Podd. He was also the brother of the late Paul and Robert Valvo.
