Rev. Romeo J. Murphy, OMI, 88, died unexpectedly on May 23rd, 2009 at The Oblate Infirmary and Retirement Residence He was born on March 6, 1921 in Berlin, NH, the son of Edouard and Eva (Croteau) Murphy.

Fr. "Pete" Murphy as he was known by many, was primarily educated at the Guardian Angels School where he graduated in 1936 under the guidance of the Sisters of the Presentation of Mary.
He entered the novitiate of the Missionary Oblates at Hudson, NH in August of 1941 professing his first vows in August of 1941 and was ordained to the priesthood on June 15, 1947 at St. Jean-Baptiste Church in Lowell, MA, by Most Rev. Louis Collignon, OMI, Bishop of Les Cayes, Haiti.

His first assignment after ordination was Our Lady of Grace Shrine in Colebrook, NH as Assistant Director. Fr. Murphy remained there for two years then continued his priestly ministry in parish work serving at Ste Jeanne d'Arc and St. Jean Baptiste in Lowell, MA for a number of years. In 1956, he was named Director of Our Lady of Fatima Retreat House in Cumberland Hill (Manville), RI where he concurrently served on the mission band preaching missions throughout Northern New England.

In 1970, he was assigned pastor of St. Joseph's Church in Plattsburgh, NY, with the care of St. Alexis Mission in Altona, NY. He then returned to South Lowell, MA and was pastor at Ste Marie's Parish for ten years. In 1980, he was assigned as chaplain of St. Joseph Hospital, Lowell where he remained until September of 2004. Fr. Murphy went into semi-retirement at that time, residing at St. Eugene House in Lowell while continuing his ministry in the city as part-time chaplain at Saints Memorial Hospital, Heritage Nursing Home and River Valley Nursing Home. He also celebrated Mass daily for the Sisters of Charity of Ottawa at Bachand Hall.

Fr. Murphy's health began to decline earlier this year and he recently moved to the infirmary at Immaculate Heart of Mary Residence in Tewksbury, MA.

He is survived by a brother, George Murphy of Berlin, NH; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Robert and Jeannette Croteau of Lewiston, ME, Isabelle Blais of Berlin, NH, as well as several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased in August of 2007 by a brother-in-law, Fernand Blais of Berlin, NH.
