Roland J. Fortin, a resident of Dracut, died on Thursday, September 3, 2015 at the Merrimack Valley Hospice House, with his family by his side at the age of 86.
Born in Lowell on April 7, 1929, he was a son of the late Pierre and Beatrice (Bigue) Fortin.
Roland was a WWII Veteran, having served in the Navy. He was stationed aboard the USS O'Hare where their home port was Norfolk, VA. Prior to his retirement Roland was employed as a chemical worker and laborer for Olin Chemical Company.
Roland enjoyed the outdoors, especially his camp in Maine. He also enjoyed bowling, and played in a league for many years. While playing in his league, Roland met his devoted partner Evelyn "Loretta" Whitney whom he loved for the past 28 years.
Roland had a sense of humor and was a practical joker. Above all he was devoted to his family and always looked forward to spending time with them.
He is survived by Loretta, his children, Robert Fortin of Lowell, Janice Fortin and her husband Michael Fortin of Pepperell, Rachel Slater of Scottsdale, AZ; grandchildren Edward Chaput and his wife Susie Chaput and Scott Chaput; great grandchildren, Jacob and Joseph Chaput. He was also the father in law of the late Richard Slater.
