DRACUT - Robert R. Proulx, age 94, of Dracut, passed away June 13, 2017 at the Fairhaven Healthcare Center in Lowell after a lengthy illness.
He is survived by his second wife, Florence (Perras) Proulx of Pittsfield, MA; a brother, Gerard Proulx and his wife Dorothy Proulx of North Chelmsford, MA; a brother-in-law, Ainsworth Kondra of Dracut, and many nieces and nephews.
Robert was pre-deceased by his first wife of sixty years, Doris (Gamache) Proulx, a sister, Jacqueline (Proulx) Kondra; and a brother, Emile Proulx, Jr.
Robert was born in Lowell in 1922, the son of the late Emile J. Proulx, Sr., and Alice (Alexander) Proulx.
A graduate of Lowell High School and Franklin Technical Institute in Boston, he also attended Lowell Textile Evening School. As a certified teacher of technical subjects, he trained Army personnel in Technical and Public Health areas.
Robert proudly served his country during World War II by enlisting in the Navy in 1942 at the age of twenty, and served as an Electrician's Mate, First Class, on the USS Vestal repair ship in the Pacific Fleet. He was honorably discharged in 1946 after the war ended. He truly loved his tour of duty in the U.S. Navy which helped him in his civilian career.
In his civilian career, he worked for thirty years as a field electrician with the U.S. Army Post Engineers in the Boston area Nike sites. He was also a member of a number of educational organizations, which includes all the following; The Museum of Natural History of NY, the Mass Audubon Society, the Sierra Club, the National Wildlife Federation, the Cousteau Society and the National Geographic Society.
In his family life, he was an avid reader, accumulating a personal library of approximately two thousand books. He was a parishioner of Ste. Therese / Ste. Marguerite D'Youville Church in Dracut for over 70 years. He volunteered in his church as President of the Holy Name Society and was also a member of the Ste. Vincent de Paul Society. He volunteered in the community and was Scoutmaster of Troop 80 in Dracut.
Robert's family would like to thank the Fairhaven Healthcare staff for the wonderful care they provided to Robert over the past two years. It was gratefully appreciated.
