Robert Hugh Maguire, died on Monday May 12, 2014 as a result of injuries he sustained from a fall at his Dracut horse farm. He was 87.
Robert was born in Lowell on August 25, 1926, a son of the late Joseph H. and Catherine (Deady) Maguire. He was raised in Lowell and graduated from Lowell High School. During his youth Robert was a champion swimmer, who won many awards during swim meets in the Lowell canals.
He served in the Army during WWII and fought in the battle of Okinawa. Robert also served in Korea following WWII. In earlier years he worked in the Lowell mills. He retired as a corrections officer and worked at the Concord Reformatory in Concord, MA for many years.
Robert's passion was raising and boarding race horses on his farm in Dracut, where he also built a practice racetrack to assist with their training. He rode sulkies and pacers at Rockingham Park in Salem, NH, Saratoga Springs Park in Saratoga, NY, and Scarborough Downs Harness Race Track in Scarborough ME. He cherished his role as owner, trainer and racer.
Family members describe Robert as a hardworking and dedicated person who enjoyed telling stories, especially on the holidays where he treasured the time spent with his family.
Survivors include his six nieces, Lynne Lorrey of Wilton, NH, Terry Lorrey Brown of Raleigh, NC, Jacqueline Lorrey St. Hilaire of Dallas, TX, Patricia Kenney of Brookline, Peggy Maguire of Brookline, and Phyllis Maguire Aden of Largo, FL. He was the brother of the late Elizabeth Lorrey, William Maguire, Mary Maguire, Joseph Maguire and uncle of the late Jean Lorrey.
