Richard “Rick” J. Hand, 77, of Lowell, Massachusetts, entered eternal life on January 19th, 2026. Born and raised in the Highlands neighborhood, Rick remained connected to his neighborhood and always had great stories about growing up there.
Rick honorably served his country after being drafted into the United States Air Force, where he was deployed during the Vietnam War. Following his honorable military service, he continued his education and earned his associate’s degree. Though quiet and often keeping to himself, Rick was known for his intelligence and the ease with which he connected once you engaged him in conversation.
Rick spent over 20 years as a Letter Carrier for the United States Postal Service, delivering mail in the very neighborhood where he grew up, and ultimately retiring from this role after a long and dedicated career.
One of Rick’s greatest passions was ballroom dancing. Even though he was naturally quiet and kept much to himself, dancing was where he came alive. Devoted to the art form, he earned numerous awards and accolades. Even later in life, when he was no longer dancing, his face would light up whenever he talked about it.
As the eldest of eight children, Rick cared deeply for his family. He is survived by his brother John J. Hand and his wife Deborah, brother William J. Hand, sister Carol Figueira, many nieces, nephews, and greatnieces and nephews. His family will forever remember the good times they shared with him and will keep his memory alive in the stories, laughter, and love they carry forward. He will be deeply missed.
He is predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Rita (Carroll) Hand, his brothers Leonard J. Hand. Lawrence J. Hand and Thomas J. Hand, and his sister Janet Hand.
Rick leaves behind a legacy of service, kindness, and heart. All who knew him will remember his gentle spirit and the unmistakable spark in his eyes when he spoke about the things he loved.
May he rest in peace.
Relatives and friends are invited to Rick’s Committal Services followed by Military Honors on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, at 11:00 AM at the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 111 Glenallen Street, Winchendon, MA.
