Lowell - Rene A. Mathieu, 90, a resident of Lowell and a WWII Army Veteran, died Sunday May 13, at a local nursing home, following a brief illness.
He was the beloved husband of Rhea C. (Cote) Mathieu with whom he would have celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary on November 18.
He was born in Lowell on June 19, 1917, a son of the late Alfred and Marie (Bourgeault) Mathieu.
During WWII he served with the 45th Infantry Division in No. Africa and Sicily.
He was a communicant of St. Louis de France Church for 60 years. Rene was active in the Lowell VFW Walker-Rogers Post 662, and the Veterans of St. Louis.
His favorite pastime was playing his guitar regularly throughout his lifetime.
Surviving him besides his wife are three daughters and sons in law. Rhea and Jim Brown of New Hope, PA, Marie and Dennis Karoleski of Portsmouth, NH, Lorraine and Anthony Barbarino of Lowell; two sons, Gerard Mathieu of Lowell, Alfred Mathieu of Tampa, FL; three grandchildren, Christie and Melanie Brown, and Capt. Tarl Karolski, US Army; and two sisters, Eleanor Travesty and Cecile Cote, both of Lowell.
