He was born in Lowell on December 20, 1932 and was one of eight children of John and Helen (Nugent) Thomas.
Raymond served as a sergeant in the Army National Guard for 6 years.
Prior to his retirement, he was employed for 28 years as a supervisor at the Billerica House of Corrections, he also served as Deputy Sheriff of Middlesex County.
Raymond was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge in Zephyrhills, FL, the Lowell Underwater Explorers, and the City of Lowell Civil Defense Dept which would assist with underwater rescue and recovery. Previously he worked as a machinist at Jerguson Gage & Valve.
He was a talented woodworker and enjoyed spending time in his shed creating wishing wells and picture frames which he often gave to family and friends. He was also an avid walker and cherished his time out in the sun. His greatest joy was having weekend gatherings with his family and friends at their Salisbury Beach house.
In addition to his wife, Raymond is survived by his five children, Gregory Thomas (wife Lynn) of Gainesville, GA, Raymond Thomas, Jr. of Wallingford, CT, Lisa Thomas of Boston, Susan Frechette (husband Paul) of Lowell and Karen Shields (husband Edward II) of Townsend; three grandchildren, Kara Tobin (husband Ryan) of Pepperell, Gwyneth Thomas of Gainesville, GA, and Eddie Shields III of Townsend; two great grandchildren, Brooklyn and Madelyn Tobin. Sister-in-law Linda (Loorom) Gauthier (husband Richard) of Dracut and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by four brothers and three sisters.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend Raymond’s Life Celebration at MCKENNA-OUELLETTE FUNERAL HOME, 327 Hildreth Street, Lowell on Friday Sept. 9th from 5:00pm-8:00pm. His Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday Sept 10th at 10am at St. Michael Church in Lowell. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Raymond’s memory to the Melech Hospice House, 11125 N 52nd St, Temple Terrace, FL 33617.
