Normand H. Cote, 76, a resident of Plymouth, NH and Chelmsford, MA died Wednesday June 5, 2013 at Emerson Hospital following a period of declining health.
Born in Lowell on April 29, 1937, he was a son of the late Leo F. and Claire R. (Lafontaine) Cote.
He was a 1955 graduate of Keith Academy and did his undergraduate studies at the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. Pursuing his passion of learning, he completed his PhD in Mathematics at the University of Massachusetts- Amherst.
Most of his career was spent teaching various courses in the mathematics department at Plymouth State University from where he retired in 2001. He was a favorite of many students and he enjoyed mentoring them towards their goals.
He was an avid reader and particularly enjoyed the challenges of the daily New York Times crossword puzzles. He was passionate about his French heritage and had a keen interest in abstract and historic art. Above all, Normand was happiest in life up in his beloved White Mountain region of New Hampshire where he called home for many years. He enjoyed taking daily drives to view the beautiful mountains, scenery and wildlife and sharing coffee with friends at MacDonald's each morning. Everybody will miss Normand's calming presence, his keen and unique sense of humor, and his love for his family.
The family would like to thank the many caregivers who looked out for Normand in recent years. In particular, his team at Brigham and Women's hospital in Boston provided the family comfort knowing he was always in good hands.
Survivors include three brothers, Rene V. Cote and his wife Jacqueline of Roswell, GA, Gerald B. Cote and his wife Pat of Ashland, NH, Louis C. Cote and his wife, Peggy of Groton; two sisters, Claudette C. Moran and her husband, Jack of Eliot, ME, Ruth L. Byrne and her husband, Mike of Chelmsford, with whom he resided; a sister-in- law, Shirley Cote of Westford; his nieces and nephews, Michael, Donald, Paul, Marc, Karen, Chris, Dan, Jason, Wally, Julie, L.J., Michelle, Matt and Shaina; and many dear friends. He was the brother of the late Roger M. Cote and Bernard L. Cote.
