Norman W. Sayer, Sr., 90, a resident of the Christian Hill neighborhood in the Centralville section, died unexpectedly on Tuesday, May 12, 2015 at the Lowell General Hospital – Saints Campus. He was the beloved husband of Mildred C. (Betty) Sayer, with whom he celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary on April 9, 2015.
Born in Lowell on August 18, 1924, he was a son of the late Alfred R. and Anna V. (Anderson) Sayer.
Mr. Sayer was a graduate of Lowell High School.
He enlisted with the United States Navy in 1943 and served during World War II until his honorable discharge in 1946.
Norman served the City of Lowell as a firefighter stationed at the JFK civic center station, retiring in 1989. He was a Board Member of the Lowell Firefighter's Credit Union and was a member of the Retired Firefighter's Association. He was also a member of the "retired firefighter's breakfast club" which gathered every Wednesday morning for breakfast at Shaw's Restaurant in Dracut.
He was a communicant of St. Michael Church and a member of the Holy Name Society.
Following retirement, Norman and his wife Mildred especially enjoyed babysitting their 9 grandchildren.
In addition to his wife he leaves three sons and their wives, Norman W., Jr. and Cordae (McDonough) of Hudson, NH, James L. and Denise (Lefebvre) of Litchfield, NH and David H. and Donna (Agostino) of Lowell; a sister, Ethel Chancey of No. Chelmsford; a sister-in-law, Mary Sayer of Lowell; 9 grandchildren, Kim, Keri, Brett, Matthew, Nathan, David, Catherine, Christina and Stephanie; 6 great grandchildren, Aeden, Jameson, Thomas, Zoey, Livia and Emmalyn; also several nieces and nephews. He was a brother of the late Alfred and John Sayer, Alice Winters and Rose Routhier.
