OBITUARY
NICHOLAS ECONOMOU
DRACUT- Nicholas Economou, 78, husband of the late Dorothy (Beaupre) Economou, a resident of this town for many years, died Wednesday, May 5, at the Veterans' Hospital in Manchester, NH.
Born in Lowell on October 14, 1925, he was a son of the late Efthemios and Panagiota (Laganas) Economou.
A lifelong member of the Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church, he served as a Board member and Vice President of Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church Men's Guild. He was a founder and leader of Boy Scout Troop 34 of that Church. He also served many years as District Commissioner for the Greater Lowell Chapter of the Boy Scouts of America.
A World War II Army veteran, Nick served with the 828th Combat Military Police and he received the Purple Heart while in action. He was a life member of the Chapter 25 Disabled American Veterans. His other memberships included 32nd degree Mason, the Pentucket Lodge, the Allepo Shrine, the Dracut Square and Compass Club and the Acacia Club of Dracut.
Prior to his retirement, Nick had been employed as a manager with Anton's for 28 years. He formerly had operated Economou Cleaners of Moody Street in Lowell.
Surviving him are a son and daughter-in-law, John N. and Maria C. (Alexion) Economou of Hudson, NH; two daughters, Pota "Penny" and her husband , Arthur Papakostas of Manchester, NH and Mary Desmarais and her friend, Ernest Rogers of Lowell; 7 grandchildren, Iris Mattia, Deana Martin, Gregory Papakostas, Kristine O'Donnell, Melissa Economou, Matthew Desmarais and Amanda Economou; also 8 great grandchildren; a sister, Mary Koumides of Pelham and a sister-in-law, Glenda Economou also of Pelham; his two brothers-in-law and their wives, George and Pauline Beaupre of Lowell and Edward J. and Gloria Beaupre of Westford and a sister-in-law, Ruth Beaupre of Nashua; also several nieces and nephews. He was the father-in-law of the late Dana R. Desmarais and brother of the late Julia Rytlinski, Theodore, George, John and Martha Baziones.
