Maurice F. Powers

April 17, 1934 — May 23, 2014

On April 17, 1934 in Lowell MA, James and Madalyn Curley welcomed a new baby boy into their family. Maurice ( "Moe" or "Maury") was the middle of 7 beautiful children. He had 3 brothers named Jim, Robert and David and 3 sisters Pat, Madalyn "Sookey" and Judy.
Maurice grew up in Lowell and attended Lowell High School. After graduating from high school, Maurice went on additional education at both Framingham State University and Northeastern University.
In 1957, Maurice was sworn into the U.S. Army. While in the Army, he worked in the Signal Corps. During his active service, Maurice served in Korea. Following his active duty service, Maurice spent 2 years as an active reservist and 2 years in the inactive reserve. He was discharged from the service in 1963.
Maurice's professional career began at Raytheon's Missile Division in Bedford, MA where he spent 21years largely having systems engineering responsibilities. He then worked at Data General in Westboro, MA; the company he retired from in 1995.
Maurice met his future wife, Lorraine Beland in High School. In 1959, Maurice and Lorraine were married at Notre Dame de Lourdes.
From Lowell they moved to Hudson, NH and then Nashua, NH. Together for 30years they had 2 children, Mark and Kevin. Mark is a physician assistant living in Hamden, CT and Kevin is a civil engineer where his lives with his wife Melissa Sieber in Albany, NY.
Since 1997, Maurice has enjoyed the tranquility of living at or near the ocean. This included the NH seacoast, the Texas gulf coast and most recently the CT shoreline.
After retirement, Maurice selflessly took on the responsibility of his in-laws, Leo and Irene. He regularly attended to their needs and provided consistent support.
Maurice is an avid genealogist and has traveled to Ireland on two occasions to pursue investigations of his family tree. By his research, he has amassed a vast amount of information and been able to trace his mother's father's (Curley) family origins to Galway, Ireland. Maurice has enjoyed this pastime for a number of years and combined his trips to Ireland with the opportunity to visit a number of other countries including Portugal, Spain, Belgium and England. Travel across the Strait of Gibraltar brought him to the continent of Africa.
Travel within the United States, Canada and Mexico brought Maurice to Salt Lake City, where he visited the Mormon Tabernacle. He also toured most Civil War battle sites in the Northeast, Pennsylvania and Virginia. He has seen many National Parks in the West as well as early forts along the St. Lawrence River and Canada. Exotic vacationing included trips to Hawaii and sailing in the Virgin Islands.
Maurice has always been an avid reader. This includes fiction, non-fiction on topics of the US Civil War and Irish History as well as docu-histories. He always enjoys classical music, Saturday afternoon operas from the Met, and time just watching the ocean.
On May 23, 2014 in New Haven CT, Maurice peacefully surrendered his soul after bravely battling several chronic illnesses over many months. He is again gladly united with Lorraine and others of his family that have gone before him.
Still on his lips up until the very time of his passing were fond discussions about Ireland.
