Maurice G. Monette, 96, a lifelong Lowell resident, residing in the Centralville section, died Sunday, November 6, 2011 at a local health care facility. He was the husband of the late Annette Dora (LaBrie) Monette, who died in 2005, and with whom he shared 60 years of marriage.
Born in Lowell on September 26, 1915, he was a son of the late Hector and Laura (Chasse) Monette.
Mr. Monette served with the United States Army in the 26th Division of the 726th Ordinance Third Army under General George Patton for over 41/2 years during World War II. He served in companies from Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes, Central Europe and Belgium. He was the recipient of several medals including the Good Conduct Medal, the American Defense Service Medal and the European, African, Middle Eastern Theater Campaign Ribbon.
A communicant of the former St. Louis de France Church, he was a member of the Parish Holy Name Society and the St. Louis Veterans Association. He was a member of the Lowell Senior Citizens and the Dracut Senior Citizens, of which he was a member of their candlepin bowling league and a member of the Dracut cribbage league. Other memberships include the Retired State, County and Municipal Employees Association, the American Federation of Employees State and County and the V.F.W., Walker Roger's Post 662.
Mr. Monette was a talented self-taught artist, using both watercolors and oils, his favorite subject being landscapes. He enjoyed several hobbies including woodcrafting, gardening, arts and crafts.
Prior to his retirement in 1980, he was employed by the City of Lowell as an industrial mechanic for 30 years.
He is survived by three children, Maurice L. Monette and his spouse Jeff Jackson of Oakland, CA, Jeanne Yorke of Los Lunas, NM and Michele McClellan and her fiancé, Mark Anderson of Lowell; two sisters, Sr. Beatrice Monette, SASV and Sr. Lucille Monette, SASV, both of Worcester; four grandchildren, Hugh McGowan and his wife Julie of TX and Sean McGowan and his wife Lisa of CA, Bill McClellan of Dracut and Kevin McClellan and his spouse Kerry Sheehan of Lowell; four great grandchildren. He was a brother of the late Hector Monette, Rev. Leo Monette, OMI, Cecile Fissinger, Sr. Rita Monette, SASV, Sr. Loretta Monette, SASV, Gladys Chretien and Irene LeBouef.
