Mary “Lorraine” (Shugrue) Smith, age 92, formerly of Lowell, died Thursday, October 1, 2026 at Lowell General Hospital. She was the beloved wife of the late Richard J. “Dicky” Smith.
Born in Lowell on February 19, 1934, she was the daughter of the late Ivy (Rourke) and Frederick Shugrue. She was raised and educated in Lowell and a graduate of Lowell High School.
Lorraine lived a long happy life surrounded by her ever-expanding family. With so many kids, grandkids and great-grandkids, there was always something or someone to celebrate. She enjoyed music from many genres and loved to join in on an impromptu dance party. Every occasion felt that much sweeter with her presence and participation. Lorraine loved to knit sweaters and blankets for all her family. She was also an avid reader.
Lorraine is survived by her children, Anne Marie Noonan of Derry, NH, William Smith and his significant other, Leigh Reddin of Litchfield, NH, Ellen Altobello and her significant other, Richard Romano of Salem, NH, Paul Smith and his wife, Micheline of Nashua, NH and Catherine LeRiche and her husband, David of Pelham, NH; her grandchildren, Sherry, William, Thomas, Erica, Stephen, Nathan, Rebecca, Jessica, Kristina, Michael, Derek, Joseph, Zachary, Samantha and Jordana; her great-grandchildren, Benjamin, Ryland, Everett, Paisley, Evan, Katie, Sophia, Emma and Peyton; her brother, Frederick Shugrue of New Hampshire; as well as many other extended family and friends.
In addition to her husband, Dicky, Lorraine is reunited with her parents, her late granddaughter, Angela, her son, Ricky, her brother, Robert Shugrue and her sister, Anne Harvey.
Relatives and friends are invited to Lorraine’s Life Celebration on Wednesday, October 7, 2026 from 4 until 7 PM at the McKENNA-OUELLETTE FUNERAL HOME, 327 Hildreth Street, Lowell. Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday at 10 AM in St. Michael Church, Lowell. Burial to follow in St. Patrick Cemetery, Lowell.
