North Billerica - Mary A. (Sherman) Lyons, 90, a resident of North Billerica, died Friday, December 25, 2009 at the Palm Manor Nursing Home in Chelmsford. She was the devoted wife of the late Raymond C. Lyons.
Mrs. Lyons was born in Lowell on November 2, 1919 to William and Catherine (Rourke) Sherman.
She attended Sacred Heart Grammar School, Immaculate Conception High School , and graduated from Lowell High School. She graduated from St. John's Hospital School of Nursing in 1942.
She served as a nurse in the United States Navy during World War II prior to being honorably discharged in 1946.
After her marriage in 1946, she settled in North Billerica. She worked as a registered nurse in the Billerica Public School System until her retirement in 1982.
Mrs. Lyons was a faithful and active communicant of St. Andrew Church in North Billerica, where she belonged to the Ladies Sodality. Until recent years, she volunteered as a Eucharistic Minister at the Life Care Center in Billerica. She belonged to a prayer group with members from St. Andrew Church, St. Mary Church, and St. Theresa Church, who gathered in prayer to say the Rosary with the residents of Life Care Center.
She was the beloved mother of Raymond Lyons and his wife Patricia of Spencer, MA; Mary McGowan and her husband John of Lowell, MA; James Lyons of North Billerica, MA; Elizabeth George and her husband William of Shrewsbury, MA; and the late Michael F. Lyons; she was the loving grandmother of Sean Lyons, Michael McGowan, Kathleen McGowan, Jeffrey George, Gregory George, and the late Daniel Lyons. She was the dear aunt of the Reverend James D. Lyons of Dracut, MA.
