LOWELL – Mary I. (Wood) Callahan, age 94, a lifelong resident of Lowell passed away Wednesday, April 20, 2016 at Lowell General Hospital Saints Campus. She was the wife of the late Francis P. Callahan, Sr. who died in 1994.
She was born in Lowell on April 7, 1922, and was a daughter of the late Samuel J. and Mary A. (Cummings) Wood. She attended St. Michael Grammar School in Lowell and was a graduate of Lowell High. She earned her bachelor's degree from Salem State College and her master's degree from Lowell State College.
Prior to her retirement, Mary was employed for many years as a school teacher for Lowell and Billerica schools.
She was a lifelong parishioner of St. Michael Church in Lowell and was a member of the Legion of Mary and the Secular Franciscan Order.
Mary is survived by her daughter, Mary A. Callahan, her granddaughter, Krista M. Lyon and her husband Matthew H.; her great granddaughter, Madeline G. Lyon; her sister, Margaret (Wood) Mahoney; three brothers, John F. Wood, Dr. William B. Wood of Palm Beach, FL, and Joseph V. Wood, Esq.; and many nieces and nephews. She was also the mother of the late Francis P. Callahan, Jr. and the sister of the late James S. Wood, Albert F. Wood, Esq., and Dr. Eugene N. Wood, Esq.
