Martha P. Callahan

Windham, NH – Martha P. Callahan, 72, formerly of Beverly, passed away November 8, 2021, at home after a long battle with Parkinson's Disease.
Born in Lowell, she was the daughter of the late George W. Callahan and Lillian M. (Murphy) Callahan and had a twin brother, Martin who was born minutes later.
Martha was raised in Dracut, MA, on Callico Farm and attended Dracut schools. After graduation she attended Plymouth State College and graduated in 1970 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Physical Education. In 2000, Martha achieved a master's degree in Education from Cambridge College. She was employed by Wakefield Public Schools as a Physical Education teacher until her retirement. During her time in Wakefield, she was the assistant coach of the woman's gymnastics' team and coached track and field putting to good use the courses she took while at Plymouth and extensive reading on the topic.
Martha had many achievements such as finishing the 100th Boston Marathon, was State Racquetball Champion in Massachusetts as well as National Singles Champion in the Woman's Senior Division. She loved the ocean and mountains and just being outdoors in general. She enjoyed kayaking, whale watching, running, golfing at Wenham Country Club, and hiking. She backpacked across Europe and climbed all 48 of the mountains over 4,000 feet in New Hampshire. She loved traveling with friends and visited many places including Costa Rica, Mexico, Greece, Scandinavia, and many destinations in the US and Canada exploring on her Harley Davidson.
Martha was an original member of the "Sagittarians" and celebrated with her friends every year which always included a production. More recently she enjoyed playing Mahjong, Canasta, and Scat.
Martha was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Martin Callahan and Laurence Callahan, sister Cynthia Langton, and two nieces Robin and Kelly Silva.
She is survived by her sisters, Elizabeth Silva of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, Margaret Rose of Derry, NH, Roberta Golden of Windham, NH, sister-in-law Judith Callahan of Hudson, MN, several nieces and nephews and several grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to Martha's Memorial Visitation on Tuesday, November 23rd from 2:00 pm until 5:00 pm with a service directly following at the McKenna-Ouellette Funeral Home, 327 Hildreth Street, Lowell, MA. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to your favorite charity.
