Marie "Gertie" (Coutu) (Urbowicz) Flaherty, 90, a long time Lowell and
Acton Maine resident, passed away on Wednesday, May 24, 2017, at Leominster Hospital, surrounded by her loving family. She was the wife of the late Theodore Urbowicz and James P. Flaherty.
Born in Lowell on April 16, 1927, she was a daughter of the late Alfred Coutu and Marie (Prive)(Coutu) Caisse and loving stepfather Emile Caisse.
Marie had worked in the Lawrence Manufacturing for many years.
Marie enjoyed crocheting, card games with family and friends, yard sales, and car trips. People gravitated to her smile and she loved Christmas holidays, and road trips with Big Jim.
Helping others with her simple generosity was a passion for Mom in her later years. She enjoyed long conversations and lunch trips with her granddaughter Kayla.
Most important to Marie was raising her family and spending time with her six children, twelve grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
She is survived by two sons, Robert Urbowicz and his wife Mary and Ted Urbowicz and his wife Kris, all of Chelmsford; three daughters, Gail Joseph and her husband Daniel of Leominster, Sheila Ayres of Acton, ME and Linda Perkins and her husband Rick of Lunenburg. Her grandchildren Nathan, Benjamin, Sam, and Dr. Emily Joseph, Stacie Sirois, Amy Urbowicz, Abigail and Amelia Ayres, Dylan and Kayla Cross, and Haleigh and Cameron Urbowicz. Her seven young great grandchildren who she enjoyed playing with; sisters in law, Kathleen Coutu of Lowell, and Joan Coutu of NJ; her stepchildren, Diane Sheehan, Patricia Snow, Maryann Lennon, James Flaherty, Jr., and Catherine Flaherty all of Lowell.
She was the mother of the late Karen Urbowicz, mother-in-law of the late Jeff Ayres, stepmother of the late Dorothy Flaherty.
