Marie E. "Leona" (Matte) Conroy

Mrs. Marie E 'Leona' (Matte) Conroy, 95, Passed away peacefully after a brief illness on August 2nd at D'Youville Life and Wellness Center, Lowell, MA. Mrs. Conroy was born in Lowell, MA on January 19th 1922 and was the daughter of the late CW5 Henry Leo Matte, USN and Marie Aurora ( Brewster ) Matte.

Mrs. Conroy was raised in Boston, MA and divided her time between Dracut, MA and Boston, MA where her family owned and operated Matte's General Store in the Charlestown Neighborhood of the city. Mrs. Conroy was educated in the Boston ( Clarence R. Edwards School ) and Dracut school systems where she cut her studies short to help in the war effort during World War II. Mrs. Conroy worked at the Charlestown Navy Yard as a timekeeper and a welder, where she met her future husband James J Conroy of Central Falls R. I.

Mrs. Conroy was the widow of her late husband, James J Conroy, with whom she relocated to Central Falls, R.I. in 1945 and raised their family. After many years in Rhode Island, Mrs. Conroy moved back to Dracut in 1964, where she lived until her recent illness. Mrs. Conroy had a long successful career in the Electronics Industry, where she worked at firms such as Sanders Associates and Accutest Corp.as a group leader and test engineer up until her retirement at age 81.

Known for her quick wit and independence, she was admired by all she came in contact with and inspired many in their professional as well as personal lives. Mrs. Conroy enjoyed spending time with family at her Summer Camp in Gilmanton, NH and was an avid reader and cook. She especially enjoyed spending time with her siblings, playing cribbage over a round of Manhattans.

Mrs. Conroy is predeceased by her siblings, Jerome 'Buddy' Matte, Theodore Matte, CMSgt Edward Matte USAF, Marie Thelma (Matte) Moschella and Marie (Matte) Nolin. Mrs. Conroy is survived by her three children, Michael Conroy and Mary Ann Mafera, of Manchester, NH, Marie (Conroy) Lamoureux and her husband David Lamoureux of Dracut, Ma and Claire Conroy, of Dracut, Ma; her grandchildren Michael Conroy Jr. and Barbara (Buffy) Waters of Derry, NH Eric Conroy and his wife Charla Conroy of Carrolton, Texas, Jamie (Lamoureux) Wilder and her husband Chris of Lowell, Ma, Jessie (Lamoureux) Mendonca and Jeff Leach of Londonderry, NH, and Stephan Conroy and his husband Aaron Cavanaugh of Londonderry, NH. Mrs. Conroy is also survived by eight great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews from the Nolin and Matte families of Dracut, MA, Colorado Springs, CO and Grand Island, Neb. as well as nieces and nephews from the Gorman, McNichols, and Conroy families of the Greater Providence, RI area. Mrs. Conroy was also the aunt of the late Michael 'Butch' Matte of Dracut, MA, and the late Daniel Moschella of Revere, MA and the late Ann Gorman of Seekonk, MA

The family of Mrs. Conroy wish to thank the staff at D'Youville Life and Wellness Center for going above and beyond in their compassion and care for Mrs. Conroy during her final days.
