LOWELL - Maria Humberta, 91, a longtime resident of Lowell died Monday, May 15, 2017 at Northwood Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center in Lowell. She was the beloved wife of the late Izidro Borges Martins who died in 1991.
She was born in the village of Fonte Do Bastardo in Praia da Vitoria, Terceira, Azores on February 13, 1926, and was a daughter of the late Jose Machado Vieira and the late Belmira Augusta Borges.
Maria spent her time tending to the needs of her home and family.
In her free time, she enjoyed knitting, crocheting, and needlepoint. She also loved to cook, tend to her garden, family gatherings, and spending summers on her home island of Terceira. Maria lived life to the fullest and was very devoted to Our Lady of Fatima.
She was a longtime communicant of St. Anthony Church in Lowell and was a member of the church's Holy Rosary Sodality. She was also a member of the Holy Ghost Society.
Maria is survived by her son, Francisco Izidro Martins and his wife Natalina Ventura of Terceira, Azores; her daughter, Maria Humberta Ormonde of Lowell; five grandchildren, Alessandra Cavaleiro and her husband Michael of Tewksbury, Al Ormonde and his girlfriend Megan Moore of Dracut, Anselmo Ormonde and his wife Amy of Lowell, Graca Leal and her husband Roberto of Terceira, Azores; and Rui Martins and his wife Patricia of Terceira, Azores; five great grandchildren, Paulo Rui, Jacinta, Mikayla, Joao Pedro, and Jose Henrique; a nephew, Mateus Meneses of California; a niece, Lucia Meneses of Terceira, Azores; and many friends and family, both here and in Terceira, Azores.
She was also the mother-in-law of the late Jose Ormonde, the sister of the late Orlinda Meneses, and the aunt of the late Eduina Sequeira.
Maria's family would like to thank the staff of Northwood Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center for the care and compassion that they gave to her throughout her stay there.
