Margarita Velez Vargas

February 5, 1945 — May 6, 2025

Lowell

Margarita Velez Vargas, a cherished mother, grandmother and friend, who was truly one of the most remarkable individuals in this world, peacefully passed away on Tuesday, May 6, 2025, at the age of 80.

Born on February 5, 1945, in El Pueblo de Maricao, Puerto Rico, she was the daughter of the late Antonio Velez and Maria Vargas. Margarita grew up in a family of eleven children in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico.

Margarita embraced her role as a homemaker. In 1964, she met Jose Velazquez, with whom she shared 25 years before they separated in 1989; however, they remained friends throughout their lives.

She was well-known for her radiant smile and her generous nature. She brought joy to every room she entered. Always seeing the best in people, she prioritized others, especially her family. Renowned for her culinary skills, she welcomed anyone who came through her door with a meal. One of her specialties during the Christmas season was making Pasteles and piñon, which were always a hit, especially with her grandkids.

Margarita was a cheerful individual who always made an effort to bring laughter to those around her. She found happiness in playing Bingo with her friends and cherishing moments with her family. Margarita was cherished by everyone and has left a significant emptiness in our hearts. Her absence will be deeply felt.

She is survived by her six children: Maria, Emilio, Nidia, Jose, Herbert and Oscar; her 18 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; her brother, Herbert Velez; as well as nieces, nephews and countless friends.

Margarita was the sister of the late Iris, Delia, Julia, Tony, Velo, Pedro, Geño, Maneco (Manuel) and Danny.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend Margarita’s Life Celebration on Monday, May 12, 2025 from 4:30 until 8 PM at the McKENNA-OUELLETTE FUNERAL HOME, 327 Hildreth Street, Lowell. Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday at 10 AM at St. Patrick’s Church, Lowell. Burial to follow in St. Mary Cemetery, Tewksbury.
