Margaret M. (O'Brien) Stone, a resident of the Christian Hill section of Lowell, beloved wife of the late Francis R. Stone, Sr., with whom she celebrated 51 years of marriage at the time of his death in 2012, passed away at the Lowell General Hospital on Wednesday, January 18, 2017, following a courageous battle against cancer with her family by her side. She was 81.
Peggy a lifelong resident of Lowell was born in Lowell on April 12, 1935, a daughter of the late Charles and Margaret (Downes) O'Brien.
She worked for many years as an operator and supervisor of operators for AT&T before staying home to raise her sons.
A parishioner of St. Michael Church, Peggy was an active volunteer for many years. She helped in the cafeteria, taught CCD and served as a Eucharistic Minister. Peggy was also a Cub Scout den mother.
A sports enthusiast, Peggy was a devoted baseball fan of her sons and grandson. She attended their games regularly. She was their biggest fan.
Peggy cherished her daily "Breakfast Club" meetings at ML Shaw's with her many friends.
Three years ago she was fortunate to visit her beloved Ireland with her son, daughter-in-law and grandson. The highlight of the trip was visiting the Knock Shrine.
Peggy's family would like to thank the staff at the Lowell General Hospital for the compassionate care given to their mother during her treatment and stay there.
Survivors include her four sons and daughters in law, Charles and Kimberly Stone of Lowell, Francis R. and Emily Stone, Jr., of Windham, NH, Timothy and Karen Stone of Pelham, NH, Matthew and Christina Stone of Dracut; a grandson, Francis R. Stone III; a sister, Eileen Locapo of Dunstable; several nieces, nephews and many dear friends. She was also the sister of the late Rev. Charles O'Brien, OP, Dorothea Fleming and John O'Brien.
