Lucia I. (Gonzales) Sawyer

LOWELL - Lucia I. (Gonzales) Sawyer, 78, a resident of the Centralville neighborhood, passed away peacefully on February 3, at the Lowell General Hospital. She was the beloved wife of Joseph D. Sawyer with whom she shared 60 years of marriage.
Born in Roy, New Mexico, on February 16, 1939, she was the daughter of the late Nick and Pablita (Archuleta) Gonzales.
Lucia was a graduate of Clayton High School in New Mexico. She met her husband Joe while he was enlisted with the United States Navy and following a three week courtship they were married.
After moving back to Lowell, she attended Tewksbury State Hospital School of Nursing and started her career as a LPN. She was employed for over 23 years at the former St. Joseph's Hospital in Lowell, retiring in 1994.
Mrs. Sawyer enjoyed playing bingo, doing puzzles, crossword puzzles, knitting, crocheting, cross stitching and spending time with her loved ones. Lucia also enjoyed traveling and went on many trips with her children when they were young. In later life, she and her husband Joe went on several cruises to many destinations.
She was a communicant of St. Michael Church.
In addition to her husband, she leaves six children and their spouses, Paulette C. and Ronald G. Hageman of New Carlisle, OH, Joseph A. and Helen Sawyer of Dracut, Michael A. Sawyer of Lowell, Donald L. and Sadako Sawyer and Manuel J. and Leah Sawyer, all of Oceanside, CA and Steven N. Sawyer of Lowell; a brother, Ernie Gonzales of NM; four sisters, Juanita Ulmer of Albuquerque, NM, Marcella Haime and her husband Harry of Las Vegas, NV, Florence Vigil and her husband Adolpho and Celestina Gonzales, all of Albuquerque, NM; 12 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews.
SERVICES - Relatives and friends are invited to Lucia's Life Celebration on Wednesday from 4 until 8 PM at the McKENNA-OUELLETTE FUNERAL HOME, 327 Hildreth Street. Funeral Services will be held at a later date in New Mexico.
