Leonard J. Hand

August 1, 1951 — September 27, 2019

Leonard J. Hand, beloved husband of Barbara H. (MacIntyre) Hand passed away on Friday, September 27, 2019, surrounded by his family at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in West Roxbury. He was 68.

Born in Lowell on August 1, 1951 he was a son of the late Joseph and Rita (Carroll) Hand.

Leonard enlisted in the US Army at the age of 18 and served in the Vietnam War. Prior to his retirement, he worked at Courier Citizen in their warehouse for many years. He was most proud of his full-time job raising his daughters while caring for his wife Barbara. Lenny was a loving father, husband, papa, and friend to everyone. Lenny had many nicknames; years ago he was given the nickname "Lay Back Lenny" because of his easygoing and relaxed
demeanor, but his favorite things to be called were "Dad" and "Papa". He enjoyed visiting Foxwoods, the beach and spending time with his family. Lenny was an avid sports fan and especially enjoyed watching football. He was a premier storyteller and had many stories to share about his life. Family was the most important aspect of Lenny's life. He checked on his children daily and was always there for them whenever they needed. He looked forward to family gatherings and spending time with his grandchildren. Lenny invented games with the kids that he would play with them when they were together. Stair Ball and Wing It were two of the more popular of his inventions. His five daughters state unequivocally that he was the "World's Greatest Dad."

Surviving him besides his wife are five daughters, Paula Hand of Detroit, Michigan, Jessica Hand of Nashua, NH, Kerri Hand and her Fiancé Joshua Bird, Janet Hand all of Pelham, NH; Cynthia McDonagh and her husband Steven of Dracut; twelve grandchildren, Michael, Nathan, Destiny, Nelson, Aiden Lemire, Christian (Casper), Aiden Bird, Liana, Jacob (Binky), Jackson (mistersippicup), Emma, Delilah; four siblings, Rick Hand of Lowell, Carol Figueira of Concord,
NH, John and Debbie Hand of Melrose, William Hand of Nashua, NH; and many nieces, nephews, and friends. He was the brother of the late Larry Hand, Janet Miskell, and Thomas Hand.
