Joseph V. Wood

October 1, 1929 — January 1, 2021

Dracut- Joseph V. Wood, 91, a longtime resident of Lowell, and most recently of Dracut, MA passed away on Friday, January 1, 2021, at his home with his loving family by his side after a courageous battle with cancer.
Born in Lowell, Massachusetts on October 1, 1929, Joe was the son of the late Samuel J. and Mary A. (Cummings) Wood.
Joe served with the rank of Lieutenant in the United States Army, Judges Advocate General Corps., was stationed in England and Ireland during the Korean war, and was honorably discharged.
He was a graduate of St. Michaels School, Keith Academy, Boston College ('52), and Suffolk University Law School. After graduation from law school, he practiced law with his brother, Attorney Albert F. Wood. Later, he worked in Boston for the firm of Paul Smith, Esq.
Joe finished his career as a guidance counselor, first at the Middlesex County Training School and then at Lowell High School, doing what he loved most: helping young people attain their goals. At both institutions, he touched the lives of countless students with his sound advice.
Joe's devotion to his family was outstanding. He was a mentor and role model to his many nieces and nephews as well grandnieces and grandnephews. He will always be a part of the Wood/Mahoney Families.
Joe was an avid sports enthusiast and quite the athlete himself, though he usually bragged about the talents of others. He loved all Boston teams, particularly the Red Sox, but he often insisted the manager be fired if he felt the season wasn't going well.
Joe was one of the original Wood brothers from Wood Brothers Florist. He worked there when the shop first opened while at BC and Suffolk, and continued to be involved through the generations, helping to oversee the continued growth and success of his family's business. Joe spent many a Saturday morning at the shop greeting and reminiscing with customers and friends.
He is survived by a sister, Peggy (Wood) Mahoney of Lowell; a brother, William Wood, MD of Palm Beach, FL; and his many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. He was predeceased by his siblings Mary, James, John, Albert and Eugene and his Goddaughter Jane Frances Mahoney Kiluk.
The family would like to especially thank the staff of Lowell General Hospital Cancer Center for their exceptional care over the past year
WOOD - It being the family's request, there will be no calling hours. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to Joe's Funeral Mass to be celebrated on Tuesday morning, Jan. 5, at 11 AM in St. Michael Church. Burial will be private.
