Sargento Jose P. Leal, 90, a long-time resident of Pelham, NH, recently of D’Youville Senior Care in Lowell, died peacefully on Thursday, May 8, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of Filomena (Rosa) Leal with whom he shared 58 years of marriage.
Born in Faial, Azores, Portugal on November 10, 1934, he was the son of the late Rosa da Gloria Pereira and Antonio Silveira Leal. Before emigrating to the United States in 1978, Jose served with the Portuguese Army for 22 years, 14 of which were served in Africa. And prior to his retirement, he worked for 19 years as a machine operator for Prince Macaroni.
He was a communicant of St. Anthony’s Church and a member of the Holy Ghost and Holy Trinity Societies as well as a member of the Portuguese Veterans group and the Portuguese Civic League (Red’s.)
Jose enjoyed walks and the outdoors, especially tending to his lawn and gardens. Throughout his life, he was also an avid Portuguese soccer fan, particularly passionate about Benfica football club.
In addition to his loving wife Filomena, Jose is survived and will be deeply missed by his two children, Dalila Sequeira and her husband, Steven of Pelham, NH and Dario Leal and his wife, Amy of Nashua, NH; his three grandchildren, Mikayla, Benjamin and Gavin; as well as his sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
He is predeceased by his sister, Maria da Luz Leal and her husband, Eduino Goulart and his niece and nephew, Eduina and Eduino Goulart.
Relatives and friends are invited to Jose’s Life Celebration on Wednesday, May 14, 2025 from 9:30 until 11:15 AM at the McKENNA-OUELLETTE FUNERAL HOME, 327 Hildreth Street, Lowell. His Funeral Mass will be celebrated immediately following at NOON at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, Lowell. Burial to follow in St. Mary Cemetery, Tewksbury.
