John O. "Jack" Martin, 82, a resident of Lowell, died Saturday, March 10, 2012 at his home with his loving family in his presence.
Born in Amesbury on May 28, 1929, he was a son of the late John R. and Helen M. (Desjardins) Martin.
Mr. Martin attended Lowell Schools and was a graduate of the former Keith Academy.
Following High School, Jack enlisted with the United States Navy and served during the end of World War II as well as the Korean War, serving aboard the USS Libra.
Prior to his retirement, he was employed by the Pipefitters Association Union, Local 537, as a pipefitter.
Jack was an avid sports fan and enjoyed following the Red Sox, Patriots, Bruins and Celtics.
A staunch Democrat, he enjoyed following politics locally and nationally.
He was also a member of the Lowell Lodge of Elks BPOE # 87 and the Greater Lowell Family YMCA.
Jack is survived by a son, Hugh P. Martin of Nashua, NH; a daughter, Elizabeth A. Skrekas and her husband Thomas of Hudson, NH; a brother, Thomas J. Martin of Chelmsford; 6 grandchildren, Emily and Alison Martin, Alexandra, Bennett, Owen and Anna Skrekas; his longtime companion, Lee Shanahan of Lowell and her children, Tom Shanahan and his wife Jean of Manchester, NH, Pat Shanahan of Lowell, John Shanahan of Tewksbury, Laura Rowe and her husband Earl of Hampton, NH and Maureen Aubrey and her husband Frank of Lowell; also several nieces and nephews. He was the father of the late Peter C. Martin and brother of the late Richard Martin and Ruth Mahoney.
