He was born in Lowell on March 11, 1944, and was a son of the late Paul and Margaret (Hickson) Fuhs. He received his education in Lowell schools and was a graduate of Lowell High School.
Jack and his sibling’s values and spirituality were guided by their time at St. Michael School with the Dominican Sisters and by being a part of the St. Michael Parish community throughout the years. They credited their sense of teamwork and sportsmanship to their longtime little league coach for the Cardinals at Gage Field, the Honorable Joseph Downs, Sr., with whom they won many championships. Jack then went on to play with the Lowell American Legion Baseball League in his teen years.
Prior to his retirement, Jack was employed for many years as a plate maker at Courier Citizen in Lowell. He also worked for many years in landscape construction and as a general handyman.
He was an avid and proud fan of the Lowell Golden Gloves and was a season ticket holder since 1961. He was a great admirer of three time New England Golden Gloves champion, Mickey Ward, whom he continued to follow into his professional boxing career. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed watching NASCAR and the New England Patriots. In his younger years he enjoyed hunting and off road motor sports.
Jack will be remembered for being a protector of his family and often carried the weight and burden that comes with that role. He had a God given capacity to feel the pain of others and would be the first one there to open his heart when needed or to uplift someone’s spirit in times of need. The classic song by the Hollies, “He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother” describes Jack’s compassion for family and friends.
He is survived and will be deeply missed by his three brothers, Thomas P. Fuhs of Lowell, Phillip J. Fuhs of Lowell and Christopher M. Fuhs of Epping, NH; his sister, Elizabeth A. Makarow of Haverhill; his longtime companion of 25 years, Sarah Halepis of Lowell, her children, Voula, Georgia and Maria and her husband Leo and Sarah’s grandchildren, whom he loved and treated like his own grandchildren, Jayden, Nariyah, Georgia and Sarah, whom he helped raise; many nieces and nephews, including Dick Kiluk and his late wife Jane (Mahoney) Kiluk
and their children Caroline and Jack, who was also Jack’s godson; Kathleen, Susan, Andrea, William, Thomas, Michael, Jared, Timothy, Kyle and Elizabeth;, many cousins, including Kevin Fuhs; and many dear friends.
He was also the brother of the late Martha E. Gauthier and her husband Raymond “Skip” and brother-in-law of the late Thomas Makarow.
