LOWELL - Miss Joan L. Cinq-Mars passed from this life on January 5, 2021, at the age of 86 after a period of declining health.
Born in Lowell on February 27, 1934, Joan was the daughter of the late Jerome and the late Catherine (Chisholm) Cinq-Mars.
A devout Catholic, Joan was a devoted parishioner of Saint Rita's Church in Lowell. As a young woman, Joan enjoyed summers at Lake Mascuppic spent swimming, boating, and reading a good book. In later years, she continued to vacation with family at the camp. Family gatherings and holidays were especially treasured.
A lifelong resident of Pawtucketville, Joan was educated at the Pawtucket Memorial Elementary School, Lowell High School ('51) where she was a member of the National Honor Society, and Lowell State Teachers' College ('55) where she earned a BS, Ed. in Elementary Education. Joan briefly taught second grade at the Kenwood Elementary School in Dracut. She later worked in the Admissions Department of the University of MA at Lowell until her retirement. Classmates and colleagues described her as earnest and reserved, sincere, conscientious, and a good listener.
For many years, Joan was a devoted caregiver to her beloved aunt and friend, the late Lillian M. Chisholm with whom she spent numerous happy Sundays lunching at The Pines and sitting by the lake. To her family, Joan was kind and gentle, never seeking attention, but always attentive and willing to share. Selfless and quietly generous, she was supportive of her church, alma mater, and community. Joan will be dearly missed by many generations of loving cousins.
