Jean L. Sweatt

March 30, 1924 — March 31, 2010

Jean L. Sweatt, lifelong Lowell resident, died on March 31, 2010. She was 86 years old.

Born on March 30, 1924, Jean was the daughter of the late Herbert Albion Sweatt and Jennie (Clement) Sweatt.

A Centralville resident, Jean attended the Tenth Street School, the Varnum School and graduated from Lowell High School in 1941.

During high school and after graduation she worked at her father's stationery and department store, G.C. Prince's, located on Merrimack Street. For many years she worked in the advertising copy division of Bon Marche Department Store and later in the Visual Department of the Jordan Marsh Department Store located on Merrimack Street. She was described by co-workers as "Divinely tall - divinely fair." She was presented with her own piece of the "Rock Bottom Basement," when she retired from Jordan Marsh in the early 1980's.

For most of her life, up to and including last year, Jean enjoyed her family's summer home on Rock Pond in Windham, NH. She was a dynamic swimmer, had interests in nature, boating, knitting, sewing and other crafts. She also loved the ocean and visited as often as possible. She was a member of the Hohe Fliegerskiverein Ski Club. In 2004 she celebrated her 80th birthday with a white water rafting trip on the Concord River. She was a supporter of the Lowell Parks and Conservation Fund and proudly participated in the Lowell Canal Water Cleaners, joining other volunteers in several of the organized canal cleaning projects. She also enjoyed sharing historical information about Lowell with others. Jean was a great sports fan of the Boston Red Sox, Boston Bruins, Boston Celtics, New England Patriots, UMass Lowell RiverHawks, the Lowell Devils and the Lowell Spinners.

Jean was survived by her sister Anne Sweatt of Nashua, NH, brother-in-law, David J. Barry of Verona, PA, friend Theresa Dionne and Dionne family of Dracut. She was a beloved aunt to Carol and Peter Martin of Beverly, Janet Barr of Dracut, Beth Gerrits and Tim Gerrits of Hollidaysburg, PA, Martha Barry of Billerica, D. Matthew and Gracie Barry, James Barry and Candice Barry of Oakmont, PA, Ethan J. and Lisa Barry, Abigail Barry and Kendell Barry of Pittsburgh, PA.
She was a dear friend to neighbors Pat Dailey, Bob and Jan Lekites, her Rock Pond neighbors and to all her friends in the "Tuesday Night Club" and the "Jordan Marsh/Bon Marche Club."

Jean was pre-deceased by sisters Helen F. (Sweatt) Barr, Ruth C. (Sweatt) Barry and brother H. Arthur Sweatt.
