James M. "Jim" Coomas, 83, a resident of Dracut, died Saturday, March 24, 2018. He was the beloved husband of the late Ruth H. (Belleville) Coomas who passed away on January 26, 2013.
Born in Lowell on June 1, 1934, he was a son of the late George and Mildred (Gendreau) Coomas.
Mr. Coomas attended Lowell Schools and was a graduate of Lowell High School. He enlisted with the United States Navy and was the number one Honor Man of his company at graduation from boot camp in Brainbridge, MD. He then served during the Korean War era until his Honorable Discharge in 1956.
Following military duty, Jim served with the Lowell Fire Department for 20 years until his retirement in 1981. He was a charter member of the Lowell Retired Firefighter's Association and also served on the Board of Directors.
Jim was involved in many community organizations throughout his life. He was a past member of the Lafayette Club, the Centralville Social Club, and the Lowell Lodge of Elks. He was also a member of the Lowell Lion's Club and was president from 1975 through 1976.
He enjoyed traveling to Florida to escape the New England winters and also took pleasure in trips to Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun. Another main hobby was cribbage and he played at the Dracut American Legion, the Dracut Senior Center and at St. Francis Parish.
Jim was a great dancer and often was the life of the party. He was devoted to his wife, children, grandchildren, great-grandchild, family and friends.
He is survived by three daughters, Linda Coomas of Seattle, WA, Brenda Bourassa and her husband David of Dracut, and Cindi Trank and her husband George of Dunstable; a son, Michael Coomas and his wife Christine (Stowell) of Dracut; four grandchildren, Lindsey Lackner and her husband Dan of Hollis, NH, Matthew Bourassa and his wife Lauren (Hoole), Lauren Coomas and Corinne Coomas, all of Dracut; a great grandson, Jack Lackner, of Hollis, NH; a brother, Thomas Coomas and his wife Brenda (Peavey) of Tyngsboro; a sister, Mary McLellan of Lowell; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Raymond Belleville of Pelham, NH, Willis and Marge Belleville of Londonderry, NH, Betty Belleville of Mesa, AZ, and Shirley McGrinchy of CA; also many nieces and nephews. He was a brother of the late Kathleen Abston.
Relatives and friends are invited to Jim's Life Celebration at the McKENNA-OUELLETTE FUNERAL HOME, 327 Hildreth Street from 4 until 8 PM on Tuesday. His Funeral Mass Will be celebrated on Wednesday at 10:00 AM in St. Francis Parish, 115 Wheeler Rd. Dracut. Burial in Gibson Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lowell Retired Firefighters Association, 50 Village Dr., Dracut, MA 01826.
