Family was paramount in Herbert J. Young's life. He was surrounded by them when he passed on Friday, November 27, 2015, following a brief illness. He was 90.
Herb was born in Lowell on September 9, 1925, a son of the late Peter and Delia (Gendron) Young. He was a resident of Lowell for most of his life prior to moving to Texas, an area he truly enjoyed, and then to Nashua, NH a few years ago.
Herbie was a WWII veteran, having served in the Army. While enlisted he served with the 3rd Infantry Regiment in Central Europe, where he guarded German war prisoners.
Upon his return from WWII, Herb married the love of his life, Blanche (Chagnon) Young. Together they have celebrated 63 years of marriage.
Herbie retired from the 3M company, where he worked for many years as a shipper.
A man of deep faith, Herb attended the former St. Louis de France Parish, and St. Rita Parish in Lowell and recently the Parish of the Resurrection in Nashua. He often meditated and prayed to his patron saint, St. Theresa.
Herbie was known to have a sense of humor. He cherished his joke book, and would pull it out to recite corny jokes that always brought a laugh.
He was an avid sports fan who enjoyed the Red Sox and visiting Fenway Park, but adored the New England Patriots. He would be seen in his Patriots jersey every Sunday during football season.
Herbie enjoyed buying a scratch ticket or two while out running errands.
He was an ardent bowler and relished his long walks for exercise and enjoyment. Surviving him besides his wife are his six children, Wayne Young and his wife Lin of Austin, TX, Craig Young of Cedar Park, TX, Cathy Frechette and her husband Paul of Merrimack, NH, Karen Bellemore and her fiance and Herb's buddy Kevin O'Doherty of Lowell, Darlene Slates and her husband Jon of Tyngsboro, Lisa Breton and her fiance Thomas Taylor of Windham, NH; eighteen grandchildren, Kerrie, Deana, Beth, Michael, Dustin, Jason, Stephen, Keith, Heidi, Jordan, Chelsea, Kurt, Kayla, Ally, Zack, Ethan, Aidan, Alex; fourteen great grandchildren; a brother Robert Young of Lowell; a sister Lorraine Andrewzkiewicz of Buffalo, NY; and several nieces and nephews. He was the father of the late Cheryl Young, and brother of the late Leo "Shorty" Young, Ruth Guilmette, Pearl Trouville, Mae Andrewzkiewicz, Dorothy Rachelawicz, Peter Young, and Jane Shemchuck.
