Dracut – George F. Woods, Jr., the beloved husband of Lorraine M.L. (Elie) Woods with whom he would have celebrated 52 years of marriage on December 5th, passed away at his Dracut residence on Monday October 24, 2011, surrounded by his family. He was 70.
George was born in Lowell on February 6, 1941 a son of the late George F. Sr., and Irene L. (Lambert) Woods.
He was educated in Lowell Schools and graduated from East Coast Aero Tech with a degree in Aerospace Technology. It was then that George embarked on a 43 year career in the airline industry. He started with Mohawk Air and through mergers and acquisitions it then was Allegheny and finally US Airways. He retired as an air frame and power plant mechanic with US Air.
George was a 43 year member of the IAMAW – International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, Lodge 1726 in East Boston. Within the union he held positions as a shop steward and a committee chair, representing Boston, Providence, RI, Hartford, CT, and Burlington, VT.
He was also a former member of the Dracut Democratic Town Committee, Democratic State Committee, and former Trustee of District 141.
George was appointed by then Governor Michael S. Dukakis as a member of the Community Development Finance Corp. for the State of Massachusetts.
He was also involved in Dracut Pop Warner Football where he served as the past President. He was also past President of the Dracut High Boosters Club.
Surviving him besides his wife are two sons and daughters in law, George H. and Robyn Woods of Cooper City, FL, Steve J. and Linda Woods of Dania Beach, FL; three grandchildren, George H. Woods, Jr., Ashley, and Tyler Woods; a sister Geraldine Simpson of Dracut; and several nieces and nephews. He was also the brother of the late James. P. Woods.
