George L. Papanotas

George L. Papanotas, 92, a resident of Dracut and Dania, Florida passed away peacefully on Saturday May 5, 2012 at the Edith Nourse Rogers Memorial Veterans Hospital in Bedford. He was the husband of the late Florence (Blamy) Papanotas.
Born in Lowell on November 28, 1919, he was a son of the late Lazarus and Maria (Picanso) Papanotas. He attended Lowell schools and graduated from Lowell High in 1938 then joined the United States Navy.
George proudly served his Country in the Asiatic/ Pacific theatre during both World War II and the Korean Conflict. After working in the Lowell Mills George became a Lowell Firefighter and retired after 28 years of service in 1981.
He was a well- known and successful competitor in many road races throughout New England and Florida where he made his winter home. He ran the Boston Marathon back to back in his 60's with only a two second difference in time. An avid fitness enthusiast, George was a member of the YMCA for over 65 years never missing a day playing handball, racquet ball and running.
He held membership in the Greek American Legion of Lowell, the VFW of Lowell and the Portuguese American Club.
Survivors include two sisters, Catherine Breen of Dracut and Christine "Tina" Dalphond and her husband, Leo of Dracut; and many nieces and nephews.
He was the brother of the late Matilda Taylor, Mary Boyden, Alice Corr and Peter Pappas.
