George W. Murphy, 89, a longtime Dracut resident died Wednesday April 24, 2013 at his Dracut residence with his loving family at his side. He was the beloved husband of Constance G. (Guimond) Murphy with whom he was married for 68 years.
Born in Lowell on August 14, 1923, he was a son of the late Christopher J. and Dora (Bruneau) Murphy.
George attended Keith Academy and was a member of the graduating class of 1942.
Following graduation, George attended the United States Merchant Marine Academy at King's Point, NY and then served in the Merchant Marines during WWII.
Prior to his retirement, he went on to work as a stationary engineer with both the Lowell Gas Company and Colonial Gas Company.
He was a communicant of Ste. Marguerite D'Youville Parish and was a member of their Men's Club.
In addition to his wife, George is survived by his children, George W. Murphy, Jr. and his wife, Deborah (Stengs) of NJ, Kathryn L. Burgess and her husband, Paul of Dracut, Joan E. Psoinos and her husband, George "Chuck" of Tewksbury, Peter C. Murphy and his wife, Jane (Ransom) of Dracut, Thomas A. Murphy and his wife, Catee (Tressy) of Dracut, Geraldine A. Auler and her husband, Skip of NH; a brother, Robert Murphy and his wife, Joan (Petroski) of Dracut; 15 grandchildren; and 10 great grandchildren. He was the father of the late Elaine B. Gagnon , father in-law of the late Donald Gagnon and brother of the late Mildred Goodwin and Alice Pepe.
