George P. "Unk" Cook

November 3, 1944 — January 27, 2022

PORTSMOUTH, NH- George Patrick "Unk" Cook, age 77, a longtime resident of Portsmouth, NH and former resident of Lowell died Thursday, January 27, 2022 at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

He was born in Lowell on November 3, 1944, and was a son of the late John and Mary Josephine Cook. He received his education in Lowell schools and was a graduate of Lowell High School.

Uncle George proudly served his country as a medic in the United States Army during the Vietnam War.

Prior to his retirement, he was employed for many years as a submarine welder at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, a job that also took him all over the world. Earlier in life he was employed by the city of Lowell.

Uncle George was an avid reader, who loved to watch Jeopardy and Masterpiece Theater and a lively game of Trivial Pursuit. Although he didn't have children of his own, he had many adoring nieces and nephews that were like children to him. His greatest joy in life was spending time in their loving company, especially going with him on his famous scenic tours around the Northeast in his Oldsmobile.

He will be remembered fondly for his gentle and sweet soul, quick wit, and his intelligence.

Uncle George is survived by a brother, Robert A. Cook of Lowell; a sister-in-law, Cynthia Anderson Cook of NY; fourteen nieces and nephews, MaryErin Fallon and her husband Daniel of Durham, ME, Patrick Cullen of Weymouth, Kathleen Cullen-Lutter and her husband Edward of Lowell, James Cutter, Jr. and his wife Renee of Chino, CA, Peter Joseph Cullen and his partner Stacey Chan of Londonderry, NH, Kevin Cutter of Revere, Tara Cullen of Dracut, Roberta Fillmore and her husband Keith of Tewksbury, Lisa Gendreau of Lowell, Joy Cook Stifano and her husband Vincent of Middletown, CT, Lin Hacker and her husband Thomas of Cocoa Beach, FL, Nancy Harris of Richmond, TX, Melissa Cook of Belmont, and Lucas Cook of Seattle, WA; many grandnieces and grandnephews; and many first cousins, whom he cherished.

He was also the brother of the late Jonathan T. Cook and Marjorie A. Cutter and her husband James and the uncle of the late Terrence Cullen.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend Uncle George's Life Celebration at the MCKENNA-OUELLETTE FUNERAL HOME on Thursday from 9:00 until 10:15am followed by his Funeral Mass to be celebrated on Thursday at 11:00am at St. Michael Church in Lowell. Burial in St. Patrick Cemetery in Lowell. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Uncle George's memory to PBS/WGBH, One Guest Street, Boston, MA, 02135.
