LOWELL – Francis R. Stone, Sr., 78, a resident of the Christian Hill neighborhood in the Centralville section of Lowell, passed after a courageous battle with cancer on Friday, September 14, 2012 at Saints Medical Center. He was the beloved husband of Margaret M. (O'Brien) Stone with whom he was married for over 51 years.
Born in Lawrence on December 9, 1933, he was a son of the late Peter L. and Bertha (Cote) Stone.
Mr. Stone received his education in Lawrence, graduating from St. Patrick Parochial School and Lawrence High School. He received an Associate Degree in Business Management from Lowell Technological College.
He enlisted with the United States Air Force 1951 and served during the Korean War. He was stationed in Germany with the rank of Staff sergeant until his Honorable Discharge in 1955.
Prior to his retirement after 31 years, he was employed by the Western Electric/Lucent Technology Company of Andover. He also worked as a real estate agent with O'Brien Real Estate and Burns-Taupier Real Estate.
He was a member of both the Western Electric golf League and bowling league.
He was also a member of the British Club in Lawrence, and a communicant of St. Michael Church in Lowell.
Mr. Stone enjoyed watching his boys' sporting activities and would often keep the box scores for their games.
In addition to his wife he leaves four sons and daughters-in-law, Charles J. and Kimberly Stone of Lowell, Francis R. and Emily Stone, Jr. of Windham, NH, Timothy and Karen Stone of Lowell and Matthew D. and Christina Stone of Dracut; a sister, Bertha "Toddy" Marcoux of Andover; a grandson, Francis R. Stone, III of Windham, NH; brothers-in-law and a sisters-in-law, John J. O'Brien and his wife Anna of Chelmsford, Rev. Charles H. O'Brien, O.P. of Lowell, Eileen Locapo of Dunstable and Claire Stone of NH; also many nieces and nephews. He was a brother of the late Victor, Peter, Norman and Frederick Stone, Irene Higginbottom and Helen Nardozza; brother-in-law of the late Dorothea Fleming.
Frank's family sincerely appreciates the care and compassion given to him from all who cared for him at Saints Medical Center as well as family and friends who have given comfort and support over the last 3 years.
