Francis J. Flynn

June 7, 1925 — February 21, 2018

LOWELL - Francis J. Flynn, Sr., age 92, a resident of the Centralville section of Lowell, passed Wednesday, February 21 at D'Youville Senior Care. He was the beloved husband of the late Agnes V. (Harding) Flynn.

Born in Lowell on June 7, 1925, he was a son of the late Owen A. and Ellen "Nelly" (McGowan) Flynn.

Mr. Flynn received his education at St. Michael School and the United States Navy.

Mr. Flynn served with the United States Navy during World War II and also served with the Navy following the Korean War, retiring after 20 years of service in 1962 with the rank of Chief Boatswain. During his tenure he served aboard the USS Tuscaloosa, the USS New Jersey, the USS Herndon, the USS Wainwright and the USS Cook. He received the European African Middle Eastern Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Theater Medal, the American Defense Medal, the Good Conduct Occupation Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. He proudly operated landing craft vehicles during the WWII for the UDT Teams.

Following his service he worked for the City of Lowell with the Department of Public Works, retiring after 35 years. He was a member of the VFW, Walker Rogers Post 662 in Lowell and a life member of the East End Club.
He was also a member of the Friends of the Chelmsford Senior Center and a member and past president of the Centralville Sportsmen Club.

Mr. Flynn was a communicant of St. Michael Church.

He is survived by three sons, Francis J. Flynn, Jr. and his wife Isabel of Litchfield, NH, Michael P. Flynn and his wife Anne Marie of Dracut, and Edward J. Flynn and Susan Flynn of Lowell; a daughter, Virginia Lynch and her husband William of Dracut; nine grandchildren, James Flynn and his wife Maria, Christine Black and her husband David, Mary Jane Flynn and her husband James Jozokos, Patrick Flynn and his wife Jaclyn, Erin Lynch, Meghan Lynch Delyani and her husband Phillip, Shawn Flynn, Brendan Flynn and his partner Christina Mehlman, and Kevin Flynn and his partner Jennifer Cline; ten great grandchildren, Sarah Black, Michael O. Jozokos, Kathryn Jozokos, Henry W. Copson, Violet Delyani, Rachael Delyani, Samantha Flynn, Adyson Flynn, Landon A. Flynn, and Mia L. Flynn; a great great grandchild, Bentley Black; his good friend, Bill Coluchi of NH; the Kearney Family of Chelmsford; and many nieces and nephews.

He was also the brother of the late Edward Flynn, Owen Flynn, and Alice Bamford and the brother-in-law of the late Thomas Harding, Winifred Greene, Mary Urbowicz, Christina Frawley, Francis Harding, George Harding, William Harding, James Harding and John Harding.

The family of Mr. Flynn would like to thank the staff of D'Youville Senior Care for the care and compassion that they showed to him during his stay there.

ARRANGEMENTS - Relatives and friends are invited to Francis' Life Celebration at the MCKENNA-OUELLETTE FUNERAL HOME, 327 Hildreth Street, Lowell on Sunday from 2:00 PM unitl 6:00 PM. His Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Michael Church in Lowell on Monday at 10:00 AM. Burial in St. Mary Cemetery in Tewksbury. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Francis' name to the D'Youville Foundation
