Elmas Simsek (née Apar,) beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend, passed away peacefully in Lowell on October 17, 2025. Born in Turkey on June 27, 1942, Elmas immigrated to the United States in 1973, where she built a life rooted in love, resilience and community.
Elmas is survived by her two daughters, Agavni (Linda) Ouellette, who cared for her over the past eight years while Elmas battled COPD and Christine Simsek, along with Christine’s partner, Jeffrey O’Halloran. She was a devoted grandmother to four grandchildren, including Khoren O’Halloran, whom she adored and two great-grandchildren.
She worked for many years as a maintenance cleaner at Heritage Green Condominiums, where she formed lasting friendships, including one of her truest lifelong companions, Mario Alvarez and his husband, Dan Ploof. Elmas was known for her warm heart, sharp wit and her incredible knack for cooking. Her humor and love of animals brought joy to those around her, especially her many friends at Frances Gatehouse, where she lived.
She was the daughter of Sarkis and Sohig Apar (DerKesperian) and was the last surviving of eight siblings. She is also predeceased by her beloved son, Vartan Simsek.
Elmas leaves behind several nieces, nephews and cousins in both the United States and Turkey, all of whom held a special place in her heart.
Her legacy of kindness, strength and laughter will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
A memorial service will be held at a later time, where family and friends are invited to celebrate her life and share memories.
