LOWELL – Edwin J. Bukala, 88, a resident of the Christian Hill neighborhood in the Centralville section of Lowell, passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, August 29, 2016 surrounded by his devoted and loving family. He was the beloved husband of the late Rita (O'Neill) Bukala.
Born in Lowell, he was a son of the late Michael and Mary (Stipula) Bukala.
He was educated at St. Stanislaus Parochial School, Lowell Trade School and Wentworth Institute of Technology.
Mr. Bukala enlisted with the United States Navy during World War II and served aboard the submarine, U.S.S. Amberjack. He received an Honorable Discharge in 1948, and reenlisted during the Korean War serving aboard the submarine, U.S.S. Halfbeak, being Honorably Discharged in 1953.
Prior to his retirement, Mr. Bukala was employed for over 35 years by IBM of Boston. Following retirement, he was employed by the Lowell Sun for several years.
Ed gave of his time and was always willing to lend a helping hand. During the Lowell Folk Festival he could be seen making perogies with his friends from the Holy Trinity Parish. He also volunteered with the local scouts for many years.
He enjoyed spending time with family and friends playing cards, Rummikub, Bocce Ball or playing the harmonica. He was also active with Lowell Youth Soccer. He enjoyed family vacations at Lake Winnipesaukee, New York and Washington, D.C. He especially cherished time spent with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He also looked forward to his afternoon naps on the couch in the sun.
Ed will be so dearly missed and so lovingly remembered by his family and dear friends.
Ed was treasured by his devoted children, John Bukala and his wife Debbie of Lowell, James Bukala and his wife Betty of Hudson, NH and David Bukala and his significant other, Heather Lindberg of Lowell, with whom he made his home. He was cherished by his grandchildren, Laurel Bakker and her husband Brian of Nashua, NH, William Bukala and his wife Beth of Chelmsford and Jennifer Fletcher and her husband Thomas of Litchfield, NH; his loving great -grandchildren, Morgan and Brendan Bakker, Benjamin, Emily and Lily Fletcher. Edwin is also survived by two sisters and their spouses, Anna and Ted Szczechura of Dracut and Dolores and Robert Boulanger of Laconia, NH; a sister-in-law, Pauline Bukala of CA; several nieces and nephews. He was a brother of the late John, Ted, Stephen, Jack and Edward Bukala.
