Edward A. McArdle, 88, of Lowell died Friday June 6, 2014 at Lahey Clinic Medical Center in Burlington following a period of declining health. He was the beloved husband of Mary A. (Egan) McArdle of Lowell with whom he would have celebrated 67 years of marriage on August 30th of this year.
Born in Lowell on July 16, 1925 he was a son of the late Bernard P. and Frances H. (Shute) McArdle.
In 1943, Ed enlisted in the United States Navy. He was honorably discharged in 1946. During his service he had served aboard the USS J-195 as a Signalman, First Class. A decorated veteran, he was awarded the World War II Victory Medal, The American Theater Medal, The European-Africa-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. He was proudly recognized with a Presidential Citation for the construction of the artificial harbours off Saint-Laurent at Omaha Beach in France.
From 1947 until his retirement in 1975, Ed was a letter carrier for the United States Postal Service.
Ed was an avid gardener, candle- pin bowler and enjoyed going for long walks. He would dine out often and would frequently visit his favorite city, Boston.
In addition to his wife, survivors include his children, Edward P. McArdle and his wife, Lisa of Putnam, CT; Kevin McArdle of Tucson, AZ; his grandchildren, Shaun, Christopher and Timothy McArdle all of Putnam, CT; Alyson Johnpier and her husband Brandon of AK; Kristen and Nicholas McArdle of Lowell; Emily McArdle of Tucson, AZ; Meghan and Johnny McArdle of MD; three great grandchildren, Cody and Noah McArdle and Rylee Johnpier; and his former daughters-in-law, Beth Madden of Lowell and Jacki Thuman of MD. He was the father of the late Brian McArdle and brother of the late Bernard P. McArdle.
