Edward C Gillis

June 26, 1933 — October 6, 2012

Edward C. Gillis, 79 years old, a lifelong resident of Lowell and a U.S. Army Veteran, died Saturday morning in Lowell at the home of his niece.

Born in Lowell on June 26, 1933, he was a son of the late Frederick J. and Mary (Campbell) Gillis and received his education in the Lowell schools.

During the Korean Conflict, Mr. Gillis served his country in the United States Army. He received the Korean Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal and the National Defense Service Medal for his time served with the Army. For many years, he was employed by the City of Lowell and was a foreman with the Department of Public Works. Mr. Gillis was a member of the Merrimack Valley Employees Association and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post # 662 in Lowell.

Mr. Gillis was an avid reader, loved to walk, sit on his front porch and take long drives on a Sunday Afternoon. He was devoted, generous, kind and charitable to his family and many friends. He was a communicant of St. Michael's Church and attended Mass there on a regular basis.

He is survived by his nieces and nephews, Thomas and Mary Mullane of Rye, NH, Michael and Kathy Gillis and Frederick and Pennie Gillis of Hampton, NH, Christine "Teenie" Garland of Lowell, Joseph and Vivian Gillis of Westford, Francis Gillis of Lowell, Edward and Kathy Tierney of Lowell and Paul Gillis of Chelmsford; several great nieces and nephews and one great great grandniece.

Mr. Gillis was the brother of the late Frederick J. Gillis Jr. and his late wife Elizabeth "Betty" (Mellen) Gillis.
