Retired Lowell Police Officer
Edward “Eddie” Pitta, 91, passed away on March 8, 2026, from complications related to injuries he suffered after a fall outside his home. He was the devoted husband of Pauline (Dube) Pitta, who survives him.
Eddie was born in Lowell on March 23, 1934, to the late Jose Pitta and Mary (Santos) Pitta. He attended Lowell schools before entering military service in 1954. Eddie served in the United States Army and was stationed in Germany during the post-Korean War occupation period, where he was awarded the Army of Occupation Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.
He met the love of his life, Pauline Dube, at the Mera Bowling Alley in April of 1952. They were married on November 6, 1954, and their love story lasted for over 71 years.
Following his discharge from the Army, Eddie worked at Stevens Mills and then Raytheon before being appointed to the Lowell Police Department in 1965. He proudly served the city as a police officer until his retirement in 1992. He received a commendation from the Lowell City Council and the Superintendent of Police for “acts of courage and heroism” at a general alarm fire on Central Street in the early morning hours of March 16, 1970. In 1975, Eddie earned his GED so that he could attend night classes at the University of Lowell, where he pursued his bachelor’s degree in criminal justice. He liked to joke that he and his oldest son “graduated” high school the same year.
Eddie was good-natured, always upbeat, and had an infectious smile. He was a fan of the New England Patriots and the Boston Red Sox, having attended numerous Opening Day games at Fenway Park as the guest of his son, Steve. He also enjoyed golf, trips to the casinos, old Western movies, and many competitive games of head-to-head 45’s with his close friend, Paul Demers. Above all else, Eddie found his greatest joy in spending time with his family.
In addition to his beloved wife, Pauline, Eddie is survived by his loving children, Edward “Skip” Pitta and his wife, Diane, of Dracut, Paula Daigle of Londonderry, NH, and Steven Pitta and his wife, Darcie, of Lowell; his five grandchildren: Tim Pitta and his wife, Ylan, of Andover, Brian Pitta and his wife, Courtney, of Dracut, Matt Pitta and his fiancée, Emma, of Boston, Wendy Foote of Hudson, NH, and Kelly Gordon of Londonderry, NH.
He further leaves nine great-grandchildren,Cole, Austin, Noelle, Nora, and April Pitta, Emily and Paul Greenwood, Michael Delmore, and Alyson Dionne; two great-great-grandchildren, David and Eileen Donovan. Eddie is also survived by his sister, Caroline Young of Andover; his close friend, Paul Demers of Dracut; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Eddie was predeceased by his brothers Manuel, George, and Joseph Pitta, and his sisters Mary Abreu, Linda Chagnon, and Rose Barker.
